2010 Wide Receiver Report

This year's wide receiver class only has one player that projects as a bonafide number 1 WR. Dez Bryant is easily worth a top 10 pick and has similiar talent to Micheal Crabtree. Most likely Dez is going to go somewhere between the 10th and 12th pick. Jacksonville is sitting at 10 and the obviously need some help at WR. Mike Sims-Walker had a breakout season last year, but he was inconsistent and is really a number 2. I think the addition of Bryant would help Sims-Walker as well as taking some pressure off MJD. If the Jags pass on him, look for Denver to take him at 11. Brandon Marshall is most likely going to be moved before the season starts and even if he isn't they could still use an upgrade at WR. Doubtful he gets past both of them, but if he does Miami definitely needs a WR, so I don't see any way Bryant falls past the 12th pick.

The next tier of WR's will range from late 1st to the middle of the 2nd round. I think Golden Tate has risen to the top of this group and you could even make an argument he's the 2nd tier by himself and the next group is the 3rd tier. Tate is the only other WR that is worthy of a 1st round pick. Then you have Benn, D. Williams, and LaFell. Those 3 will most likely go early in the 2nd round. All of these players could make very good number 2 WR's in the NFL and they are good value for the 2nd round.
*
Next you have Gilyard, D. Thomas, A. Roberts, and C. Mitchell. The WR with the most upside out of this group is Roberts in my opinion. He looked fantastic at the practice week for the Senior Bowl. Also Thomas is getting some hype and with his size he could be a very good player and may end up being a steal if he lasts until the 3rd. Gilyard is the most well known of these players and he brings the most versatility to the table. Thats why I think he'll be taken before any of these other guys. He can line up in the slot or outside, and is an excellent punt and kick returner. Versatility makes players very valuable in the NFL and although his stock has fallen some I expect him to go in the mid to late 2nd round. Mitchell has excellent size, but I think he's the weakest of this group. He comes from an offense that doesn't translate to the NFL in any way.

After this group it's pretty much a crapshoot, but some other names to look out for are Jacoby Ford who has one of the fastest combine 40 times ever. Taylor Price may be the best vertical speed guy in this draft. Mike Williams has a good skill set, but has character issues i.e. he quit his team at Syracuse. Overall this draft is lacking with top notch wide outs, but is very deep with being able to get adequate guys who will make an impact on their respective teams. I think there's a possibility that you see alot of these WR's fall come draft day. The reason for this is next year's draft is going to be loaded at WR, maybe the best class in the history of the NFL. For that reason I think you'll see alot of teams avoid using an early pick at the position to hold out for next year's draft. If this happens teams could end up getting some excellent value in the 3rd and 4th rounds.
